Reviews for My Second Self

  • "A triumph for another all Irish production…"

'My Second Self' runs in the Players Theatre this week and is a world premiere of note. Geoff O Keeffe and Steven Masterson play two men who have a chance meeting in a cafe early one morning. Leyton (Masterson) has just had another unsuccessful night on the pull for an older man. He sets his eyes on a book reading suited man in the Cafe and what enfolds does not concur to the normal ageist stereotype that conforms with the youth culture of 'the scene'.

Director Alan Kinsella ensure the play move well, is skilfully lit and brings out the humour and the edge in Masterson’s dialogue. The two actors are on top form, lovely light and shade in their delivery and wringing ever ounce of humour and pathos is this sometimes sentimental script. Physically the unlikely camp stereotype Leyton has every cliché in the book off to perfection. O'Keeffe is a man at a shattering crossroads in his life. His sexuality, his marriage and his fatherhood all crash together in the previous few days and as a result is remarkably composed and coherent - the delayed shock was definitely on hold.

An all night Sambuca session loosens tongues and two parallel stories from different eras converge in an hour of commendable drama. The dream scene is the dramatic highlight and the ending probably a little too sentimental which doesn’t fully do justice to the characters previous onstage journey.

The pace zipped along with humour and plausibility. My Second Self from No Tears Production does pull at the heart strings but has a dignity for both men at different points of the age spectrum that is commendable, entertaining and worthwhile.

Poignant moments, comedic, a little tragic, and redemptive. I've seen 3 of Derek Masterson's scripts performed now, this is definitely the best
